Accountants are marketing business to business services and therefore have a choice of routes. They can market their products to companies that go across all business types (horizontal markets) or they can focus on the individual needs of specific business types (vertical markets). Think about your local area, your own expertise – can you develop a vertical market?

Know your Competition
Competition in the accountancy profession can take many different forms including: competition by size, competition from specialists, competition by market focus and competition by technology.

Understand your clients
Understand what you clients want from their accountant. Information is readily available in your own customer records that can help you identify your own clients needs. For example what do your own clients annual reports or year-end accounts tell you about them? What are their plans for growth, what are their success factors, what problems do they have for which you have a solution.

Telephone interviews are a quick and cost effective way to obtain opinions from a sample of your clients. Use client research to assess your clients response to your services and to identify areas of improvement.

How many of your clients have a written business plan? Identify those who don’t, then identify those who you can help to write one.
