Google Local http://local.google.co.uk/ is a map based service finder which could help you improve your search engine rankings.

To get your site in Google Local, you need to create an account by going here.

A lot of the information in Google Local is being supplied by Yell so if you are listed here then you should already be appearing. However, to check go to http://local.google.co.uk/ and type in "your industry sector i.e. accountants/solicitor etc *your area*" and see if you come up.

An additional benefit of listing yourself in Google Local is that you could appear in the main Google site search results. Do a search "your industry sector i.e. accountant *your area*" and see sandwiched between the Sponsored Links at the top of the page and the natural listings a section called "Local Results for..." and a compass icon. This is where you have a chance of appearing.
